For over 120 years, the Schaeffer Mortuary has been an icon on main street Caldwell. The business remained in the Schaeffer family for many years, down through the Thompson family who sold to Mike Reager. Mike sold to Mark Blankenship who in turn sold in Nov. 1990 to the Elliott Funeral Homes, located in Anthony and Harper. That is when David Mardis returned to Caldwell to manage the Elliott-Schaeffer Mortuary. In July 2008, David & Teresa purchased the mortuary from Elliott’s and on July 23, 2008, reopened it under the name of Schaeffer Mortuary, paying homage to the rich history Schaeffer’s has in Caldwell. Schaeffer Mortuary offers Traditional Funeral, graveside, or cremation services.
Today the Mardis Family takes pride in assisting families during their most vulnerable times, making sure that every detail is taken care of so the families they are working for don’t have to. Owner, David is an ’81 graduate of Kansas City Kansas College of Mortuary Science. Though he managed other mortuaries, when the opportunity arose for him to come back to Caldwell and own his own Mortuary, it was one he couldn’t pass up. Teresa, a co-owner became a licensed Funeral Director in 1986 and is a vital member of the Schaeffer Mortuary Team. Daughter, Sarah received her Master Funeral Directors and Embalming Licenses in 2010 and returned to Caldwell in 2019 to learn the ropes at Schaeffer’s and Mardis Monument. Sarah is a quick learner with her father’s sense of humor and both of her parent’s work ethics.
Schaeffer Mortuary is a huge supporter of Caldwell, redoing the alley behind the mortuary most recently, the Mardis families are active volunteers in Caldwell and truly love serving Caldwell and surrounding areas.
