Historic State Proclamations Exchanged to Celebrate 150 Years of the Chisholm Trail
Published by Caldwell on Fri, 02/17/2017 - 4:15pm
A proclamation declaring the historical relevance of the Chisholm Trail to the State of Kansas will be signed in Topeka by Governor Brownback on March 24. Karen Sturm and Jill Kuehny will be attending from Caldwell along with representatives from the other communities involved in the Kansas Chisholm Trail 150 planning committee. On April 29th, the Kansas document will begin its journey in Abilene, Kansas with a horseback rider carrying the paper in his saddlebag, heading south along the old Chisholm Trail. The rider will hand-off to a fresh horse and rider about 20 miles down the trail, continuing through Newton, Wichita, Clearwater, Mayfield, and finally to the state boundary in Caldwell. The Oklahoma proclamation riders will meet the final Kansas rider, Sam Wylie and his mounted police escorts, at the intersection of Main and 1st Streets. The proclamations from each state will be exchanged at 12pm high noon on Saturday, May 6th during Caldwell's Chisholm Trail Festival. Many representatives from Kansas and Oklahoma will be on hand to watch the event. We will have benches and bleachers set up for viewing. The exact hand-off locations during the week-long ride will be announced closer to date. You may want to attend one or many as each will have some fanfare surrounding the exchange at each location!
Speaking of locations, April 1st is the official kickoff day for Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas to start celebrating the 150th anniversary of the trail. Caldwell, Mayfield, Wellington, and Clearwater have been meeting as the Sumner County CT150th Event committee throughout 2016. We will be celebrating the April 1st kick-off together at the Chisholm Trail marker at the Wellington Lake. Time will be announced soon. Plan on joining in on this festive event!
